HKU Catering: Promotion on Cookies Ordering from TWGHs iBakery - <2014 Christmas Cookies>

HKU Catering: Opening of HKJCBIR Cafeteria - October 16, 2014 (Thursday)

CEDARS is pleased to announce that a new cafeteria on the 4/F of HKJC Building for Interdisciplinary Research, 5 Sassoon Road, will commence its operation at 8:00 a.m. on October 16, 2014.  The cafeteria will be run by Knockbox Coffee Company, one of the most renowned specialty coffee shops in the territory.

HKU Catering: "Substandard Cooking Oil" Incident in Taiwan

Immediately after the announcements of the Centre of Food Safety (CFS) in the past few days regarding the “Substandard Cooking Oil” incident in Taiwan, CEDARS has taken this up with all of our Caterers, trying to make sure no such substandard cooking oil has been used in their products served on our campus.

From the information we have collected so far, most of the catering outlets in the University are using vegetable oils (e.g. seeds oil, soybean oil, etc.) as cooking oil for food production on site.  As the use of lard in cooking process is not common in the campus catering outlets, the risk and extent of which the University community may be affected by this incident shall be relatively low.  Nevertheless, CEDARS will keep you posted once we have got hold of more information, if any, related to this incident.

HKU Catering: Updates on Campus Catering Services (FSCAC Restaurant, CYMAC eateries, Knockbox Coffee)

1. Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre Restaurant (FSCAC Restaurant)

An open tendering exercise was conducted earlier in April 2014 for the selection of operator for the FSCAC Restaurant in the Swire Building and the contract was awarded to Asia Pacific Catering Corporation Ltd. (i.e. the existing operator).  The restaurant will be closed for minor renovation from July 25, 2014 (Fri) to July 31, 2014 (Thu) and normal operation will be resumed from August 1, 2014 with the following operation hours:-

Mon – Fri          : 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Sat                   : 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Sun and P.H.    : CLOSED

2. Eateries in the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre (Maxim’s, Café 330, Fru:yo Factory)

In order to facilitate upgrading work for the main power switch in the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre (CYMAC), power supply to the CYMAC will be suspended from 11:00 p.m. on July 26, 2014 (Sat) to 4:00 a.m. on July 28, 2014 (Mon).  All eateries located at the CYMAC, including Maxim’s, Café 330 and Fru:yo Factory, will be closed on July 27, 2014 (Sun).  The affected eateries shall resume normal operation on July 28, 2014 (Mon).

3. Coffee Corner at the Chi Wah Learning Commons – Knockbox Coffee Company

Knockbox Coffee Company, located on the 1/F of the Chi Wah Learning Commons, Centennial Campus, had decided to terminate their operation and the request has met with the approval of the University.  They ceased to operate since May 30, 2014.  Those who still wish to enjoy their coffee may visit their other outlet in downtown Mong Kok.

Subway – Declaration of Azodicarbonamide-Free Bread

Referring to the recent news coverage on the use of azodicarbonamide – an additive that is not supposed to be found in food for human consumption and may be potentially harmful to human (causing allergy, respiratory symptoms and asthma) upon consumption at high level, in bread served in Subway outlets in the North America region,  Subway Hong Kong Headquarter has recently made a formal declaration that the bread served in all Subway outlets in Hong Kong (including the outpost in HKU) comes from another source (i.e. New Zealand) and does not contain even a trace amount of azodicarbonamide.  Their products are therefore totally safe for human consumption.  CEDARS will keep the University community inform of the latest update on this matter, if any.

HKU CATERING: Suspension of Catering Services at Bay View Restaurant on January 12, 2014 (Sunday)

Due to the statutory inspection to the main electrical installations by the Estate Office, power supply to Bay View Restaurant at No. 6 Sassoon Road would be temporarily suspended on January 12, 2014 (Sunday) from 09:00 to 18:00.  In view of the power suspension, Bay View Restaurant will be closed on the mentioned day.  Normal catering service will be resumed on January 13, 2014 (Monday).
