2.    What are the benefits of the new model?
With the new model, a number of outlets will come under a caterer who has strong expertise and business network in the industry, and a holistic view can be taken in operation. The synchronised efforts will bring a wide and coordinated selection of global and local food choices to the HKU community and ensure consistency in quality. In addition, the new caterer places great importance on customer feedback and is in a good position to respond to special dietary needs and align with students’ campus life patterns.

3.    When will the Main Library Coffee Shop be closed down?
What will come next?
In anticipation of the delay in the opening of the new catering outlets at the Main Campus in the new academic year, an arrangement has been made to continue the operation of the Main Library Coffee Shop, currently run by Starbucks Coffee, until May 31, 2019. A Coffee Academics outlet will be opening at the same location in August 2019. Students and colleagues will enjoy quality coffee and a wide selection of other drinks and food in a consistently comfortable and welcoming ambiance which supports HKU’s sharing culture.

4.    During the service interruption period, where can we eat?
Students and colleagues may visit outlets that are not involved in this phase. Please refer to the CEDARS website https://www.cedars.hku.hk/campuslife/catering/catering-outlets for the list of catering outlets in operation. As the new catering outlets are still undergoing renovation by the new caterer and will not be able to open in time at the beginning of the academic year, temporary food counters will be set up at five different locations in the Main Campus, Centennial Campus and the Sassoon Road Campus. Operation of the temporary pop-up food counters will end progressively following the opening of the new catering outlets. Please refer HERE for details of the pop-up counters and the updated food offers.

5.    How are the prices at the new catering outlets set?
The prices are set based on the “Good Value for Money” principle. Pricing policy forms part of the new contractual arrangement and is under mutual agreement between the University and the caterer by taking into consideration an array of relevant factors including inflation, material cost, consumer price index, labour and wages indices. Please stay tuned to our announcement later in August 2018 for the full opening menus of the respective outlets.
