University Financial Assistance (for local students only)
Supplementing Government financial assistance schemes, there are a number of bursaries and interest-free loans managed by the University to assist students with financial hardship. These awards, donated by private organisations and individuals, are allocated to full-time local students on the basis of their financial needs.
Main Exercise Application: September
At the beginning of the term, students anticipating difficulties in balancing their budget for the academic year should submit an application (via the Student Information System on the HKU Portal) to the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) by a specified date in September.
Most of the funds are distributed in the Main Exercise. A small portion of the funds will be reserved for Emergency Assistance and student travel loan scheme.
Students with urgent needs at this point in time should however apply for emergency assistance.
Main Exercise Application Details
Emergency Assistance Application : All year round
Students who encounter financial difficulties arising from the following situations may apply for emergency assistance any time during the year.
- sudden changes in family circumstances
- late availability of other financial resources
- sudden increase in expenses or drop in income
Emergency Assistance Application Details
Student Travel Loan : All year round
Interest-free loans are available to support overseas travels relating to your academic studies. Such loans are opened for application any time during the year.
Accommodation Loan : Start of term till March
Interest-free loans are available to support expenses for living in hall and student residences; you can apply as part of the September Main Exercise Application or during the second semester.
Extra-curricular Activity Loan: All year round
Interest-free loans are available to support expenses for joining extra-curricular activities in Hong Kong. Such loans are opened for application any time during the year.
