Public Lecture on The Economics of Climate Change:
Key Elements of a Global Deal on Climate Change

By

Professor Lord Nicholas Stern

You are cordially invited to attend a Public Lecture on The Economics of Climate Change: Key Elements of a Global Deal on Climate Change by Professor Lord Nicholas Stern. The details of the lecture are as follows:

Date: October 27, 2008 (Monday)
Time: 2:30pm-3:30pm
Venue: Wang Gungwu Theatre, The University of Hong Kong.

Professor Richard Wong, Deputy Vice-chancellor and Provost of the University of Hong Kong, will welcome Lord Stern. Mr. George Leung, Advisor, Strategy and Economics Asia Pacific, HSBC, will be the moderator of the event.

In the lecture, Professor Lord Nicholas Stern will discuss the economics of climate change and the implications of the commitment to cut global greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050. He will address such questions as: What should be the main elements of a global deal? How should it be achieved and sustained? He also will emphasize that this is about low-carbon growth and not low economic growth, with low-carbon growth itself be a growth strategy. It is to his belief that the urgent challenge is to build a framework for a global deal so that a coherent, effective, efficient and equitable agreement can be reached at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 15th Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen in December 2009.

Professor Lord Nicholas Stern is a renowned expert on both economic development and climate change. Formerly Chief Economist of the World Bank and Head of the UK Government Economic Service, he is currently special adviser to the Group Chairman of HSBC. He also serves as the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government heading the India Observatory within LSEˇ¦s Asia Research Centre, and Chairman of the new Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.
