Directory of Student Support 2008

Message from the Dean

Dear Students,

Welcome to the University of Hong Kong! I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to you for coming to HKU. You will embark on a wonderful learning journey which will alter the rest of your life.

HKU endeavours to "produce well-rounded graduates with lifelong abilities to provide leadership within the societies they serve." We adopt a whole-person approach so that our students will become "graduates of distinction committed to lifelong learning, integrity and professionalism, capable of being responsive leaders and communicators in their fields."

To this end, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) works closely with various academic and non-academic units and student societies to build an intellectually stimulating and culturally diverse campus to enrich your total campus experience. We choose CEDARS as our logo as they are ornamental trees with durable scent wood and evergreen leaves. We hope all of you will have the durable scent of the intellectuals and be forever young and fresh. We also hope that you can find shelter and support in our services.

As you can see in this Directory, our work covers almost every aspect of your life at HKU. In addition to what we do within the campus, we have an extensive network of community leaders and local and overseas organizations who are very willing to help enrich your learning experience. With all these, we hope to provide you with a platform to prepare yourself for making significant contributions to the societies you serve in future.

In particular, I would like to draw your attention to the Orientation Programme which is designed to welcome, empower and help you to “orient” yourself to the new living and learning environment. At each of the sessions, you will find out how you may best use our provisions and resources for your self-exploration and whole person development.

If you have any thoughts, feelings or comments that you would like to share with us during your time at HKU, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on 2859 2306 or by email at dosa@hku.hk.

I look forward to seeing you at the Orientation Programme. May I also wish you a very fruitful and enjoyable time at HKU.

Best regards,
Albert Chau (Dr.)
Dean of Student Affairs
