Under the gloomy sky of a small town in northern China, different protagonists’ lives are intertwined in this lugubrious tale of nihilistic rage. Loosely adapted from one of the two controversial novels Hu Bo wrote before his death, An Elephant Sitting Still takes place over the course of a single day in the industrial desolation of China’s Hebei province and collects four wayward souls into a decrepit mosaic. In the end, the characters board a long-distance bus toward Manchuria, where a circus elephant is said to be sitting still.
Hu expanded this four-hour tale into a vision of life. Film Critic Ka Ming and a young film director Rex Ren will join as discussants in the post-screening discussion.
This film won the Best Feature Film in Taipei Golden Horse Awards, and the GWFF Best First Feature Award Special Mention in Berlin International Film Festival.
