GE2014-43
Does the ambiance of university make you feel as if you were walking in the mist and losing your way? You are not alone. Among those who share the same feelings, some carry on, using trial and error in the hope of getting back on track, while some decide to take a break to reflect on their current paths and their future goals. Adventurers, dreamers, alternative players, idealists; whatever their path, they have taken a road less travelled. What encouraged them to take a gap year? How was it realised? Was there any struggle?
This series of sharing sessions is meant to be irrelevant to the formal curriculum. Fellow schoolmates break the frame and venture into the unimaginable. Here are their stories.
Session 1 | 1/4 (Wed) | 實踐所學
講者 Speakers

羅文圻 Ian Law BSc, Year 3

Joshua Kanjanapas BBA (Law), Year 4
Session 2 | 13/4 (Mon) Social Innovation for a Better World
Speakers:

Andre Kwok BSocSc, Year 3
Currently in a gap year, the founder of UNlimited Institute (UNi), a social business based in Hong Kong and Cambodia, Andre has been dedicated to bridging talent between the two places. In his ongoing journey, he travelled to Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and other ASEAN countries to link the synergy of young entrepreneurs to Hong Kong. He believes that change in Hong Kong can go beyond Hong Kong, with opportunities in ASEAN being one of the keys.

Stephanie Man BBA (IBGM), Year 3
Stephanie initiated a crowd-funded gap year called Asia Sense Tour to build community-based social businesses with NGO partners. She co-created a silver ring brand with a team of village silversmiths in Indonesia. It was a great success financially and she witnessed what drives her far and beyond – ‘community-led social innovation’. Having learnt a great deal about development and community organisation, she is now back at HKU, aiming at translating her experimented dream career into a sustainable reality.
Session 3 | 15/4 (Wed) Internship and Funeral Planning
Speakers:

Hanah Jang BEcon (Economics and Sociology), Year 3
Hanah sought to learn more about herself and life, and thus took a gap year to India for an internship in marketing research for six months. With her meagre salary, she survived by living a simple life in a more meaningful way. The unusually amazing daily routine made her a stronger person to face challenges with courage.

Nicole Leung BSocSc (Government and Laws), Year 3
A rather not typical law student, Nicole took a different path. She completed a Diploma in Funeral Planning and is currently working as a part-time junior funeral director. Organising funerals of different religions and learning about mortuary make-up have led her to reflect on life and death. Her passion lies in death education and palliative care.
