In his early years, John Lee studied classical piano and modern dance and created many musical theatre works. In the 90's, he was drawn to frame drum culture from different parts of the world. In 2002 he was awarded the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship to follow frame drum and throat singing masters, Glen Velez and Ed Herbst in New York. Over the years he played in concerts around the world and collaborated with artists such as Sainkho Namtchylak and Guqin player Wu Na. In recent years, he begins to explore the natural acoustic resonance. His outdoor performances in South Bay Lake wetland slate, Lamma Island and Shek O were all well received.
