Travel with Controversy

We all have different reasons for travelling. Some want to see the world, some want to find inspiration, some want to find themselves, and some just want to relax. To choose a perfect travel destination, we all have different standards. To go or not to go, it seems we already have the answer. Speakers from diverse backgrounds are invited to share their thoughts about the controversies in travelling.

I (don’t) go travelling because I love this world?

Travel becomes more convenient with the developed transportation system nowadays, and there are many more people would choose to explore uncommon destinations such as the Polar regions, Amazon forests and snow mountains etc. However, the excessive inflow of tourists will result in depletion of the natural resources. Meanwhile, more and more people boycott animal-related travel activities, such as elephant riding and whale watching. Then we can ask ourselves a question: can travel and conservation coexist? And what attitude should we have while traveling?

Wilson Cheung and Chris Leung are invited to the first lecture to share their views on the struggles and tensions between travel and conservation.

Should we still travel to North Korea?

The death of Otto Warmbier makes everyone want to think again whether it is ethical to travel to North Korea. Some people believe as a global citizen, it is not a problem if we want to understand the cultures and people from North Korea; while some people believe we should boycott this as it is an indirect support to Kim's repressive regime.

We have invited Steve Chung, a Korea expert from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Rubio and Jamie, the co-founders from Eastern Vision who frequently organise tours to North Korea to share their views on this controversial matter.

Speakers:
Mr. Steve Chung (Assistant Lecturer, Faculty of Social Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong)
