West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) has been the largest arts and cultural projects in Hong Kong’s history. With a complex of theatres, performance spaces, museums and public space coming on stream in the years ahead, expansion of cultural connections and interchanges are considered to be flourishing locally and globally.
How does the development of the WKCD further shape the cultural landscape of Hong Kong in terms of artistic direction, cultural programming, arts to human resource management and community engagement, and extend the influence of the arts to all other sectors? In this series, arts and cultural practitioners will explore the possibilities and impact from different perspectives.

Visual and Performing Arts in Hong Kong: Opportunities and Challenges
In recent years, the development of the local arts and culture scene has flourished, with the completion of cultural venues integrating art and conservation such as the heritage buildings in Central, the establishment of major international exhibitions, art fairs and auctions, the use of arts and cultural elements in commercial institutions, shopping malls and hotels, and the construction of new performing and visual arts venues in the WKCD. In this session, visual and performing arts practitioners will share their personal artistic journeys, examining how recent developments in Hong Kong have helped to generate a dynamic dialogue between artists, curators, and the public, and the importance of arts and cultural curation and exchange with the younger generation, especially university students.
This talk is part of the “Arts and Cultural Management 101 Series” offered by West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.

西九作為大舞台──劇場與戲曲發展
How does the West Kowloon Cultural District Boost the Development of Theatre and Chinese Opera?
戲曲中心及Freespace預計於2018年底及2019年中相繼開幕，前者以推動戲曲製作、粵曲與其他傳統戲曲的保育和發展為己仼，後者則聚焦於前沿的跨界及跨文化創作；而演藝綜合劇場亦預計於2021年落成，擁有大型、中型及小型劇場及多個排練場地。新增的演出場地與設施配套如何能帶動藝術創作及劇團發展？硬件設施加強了，軟件上還需甚麼配合？
Xiqu Center and Freespace will soon open by the end of the year and in the middle of next year to promote the conservation and development of Chinese opera productions, Cantonese opera and other traditional Chinese operas and foster cross-cultural collaboration respectively. Lyric Theatre Complex is also scheduled to be completed by 2021 with a large, medium and small-scale theatre and several rehearsal venues composited. How would the new venues and facilities nourish the innovation and development of arts groups? Given the cultural facilities are strengthened, what software do we need to contemplate?

Cultural Leadership in Performing Arts: In Dialogue with Alison M. Friedman
Prior to joining the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority as Artistic Director, Performing Arts, Ms. Friedman served as the Director of her own cultural exchange organisation. In this talk, she will share her artistic journey and her perspective on Hong Kong’s art scene as well as the prospects for the development of performing arts in Hong Kong.

Bio of Instructor(s) 導師簡介:
Mr. Ken Wong (Head, Learning and Participation (Performing Arts), West Kowloon Cultural District Authority)As Head of Learning and Participation (Performing Arts), Ken is responsible for formulating and leading the vision, strategy and delivery model for learning and public engagement programmes. Prior to joining the Authority in early 2017, Ken held the positions of Head of International College and Principal Lecturer (Media and Culture) in Hong Kong University - School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE), where he was responsible for managing a college of over 1,600 students, overseeing the implementation of internationalisation strategies and the development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in creative industries. Ken has over 17 years of teaching and administrative experience in higher education, having worked for Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and HKU SPACE.
Ms. Isabella Tam (Associate Curator, Visual Art, M+)Isabella is Associate Curator for Visual Art at M+, where she conducts in-depth research for the M+ Sigg Collection of Chinese contemporary art, a core collection of the museum, as well as focusing on photography in East Asia and beyond. Co-curator of Canton Express (2017) and M+ Sigg Collection: Four Decades of Chinese Contemporary Art (2016), she also contributed to a number of other M+ exhibitions including Mobile M+: Inflation! (2013) and Song Dong: 36 Calendars (2012). Before joining M+, Isabella was Assistant Curator at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre and participated the Whitechapel Gallery Curatorial Fellowship in London. She received master’s degrees in Art History and Curatorial Studies from the University of Essex.
Ms. Winsome Tam (Senior Manager, Performing Arts (Learning and Participation), West Kowloon Cultural District Authority)Winsome has joined the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority as Senior Manager, Performing Arts (Learning & Participation) in November 2017. Prior to that, she worked with the Asia Society Hong Kong Center for over a decade, leading the development and curation of over 600 public programmes and exchanges on Asian arts and culture, across disciplines of visual arts, music, film, performing arts, architecture, design, literature and arts education. Before joining Asia Society, Winsome worked in the British Council’s arts and creative industries department, liaising with schools and arts organisations in Hong Kong, mainland China and the UK to promote creativity through arts appreciation. A graduate of the University of Virginia, where she gained a Bachelor of Science degree, she also holds a master’s degree in Communications from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Mr. Yuen Cheuk-wa (Head of Media Design & Technology in the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts) Mr. Yuen, an award-winning sound designer, is currently Head of Media Design and Technology in the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Before joining the HKAPA he worked as Technical and Production Manager (Performing Arts) at the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, where he had a pivotal role in the design planning and development of the Lyric Theatre Complex project. He also produced and directed the multimedia concert Primary Shapes: an Eternal Golden Braid (2009), and created a 52-channel surround soundscape for the multimedia spectacular Bubble Show: Year of Dragon for City Of Dreams Macau and an original multi-channel soundscape for the Pacific Place Mall. Yuen earned a bachelor’s degree at the HKAPA, a master’s degree in Sound Design at the California Institute of The Arts and a master’s degree in Architectural Acoustics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
阮兆輝先生Mr. Yuen Siu-fai 為資深粵劇表演藝術家。九一年獲香港藝術家年獎，九二年獲頒授BH榮譽獎章，零三年獲香港藝術發展局頒發藝術成就獎。阮氏致力粵劇教育及承傳工作，經常在各大學及中學演講及主持學術講座，一一年及一二年更分別出任香港理工大學及香港教育大學駐校藝術家，一二年獲香港教育大學頒授榮譽院士。又應香港八和會館邀請，於一二年起擔任油麻地戲院場地伙伴計劃「粵劇新秀演出系列」的藝術總監至今。一四年獲香港特別行政區政府頒發銅紫荊星章，一六年再獲香港藝術發展局頒發傑出藝術貢獻獎。著作方面，阮氏親自執筆撰寫的自傳「阮兆輝棄學學戲 弟子不為為子弟」，榮獲「2016年香港金閱獎 (最佳文史哲書)」及 2017「香港出版雙年獎」「藝術及設計」類別的「出版獎」。一七年著作「生生不息薪火傳──粵劇生行基礎知識」獲「2017年香港金閱獎 (生活百科)」。阮氏現為香港八和會館副主席及香港康樂及文化事務署博物館專家顧問 ( 粵劇 )。
鄧樹榮先生 Mr. Tang Shu-wing本港知名導演、香港演藝學院戲劇學院前院長、「鄧樹榮戲劇工作室」藝術總監，畢業於香港大學及巴黎新索邦大學。其作品以精準破格舞台美學及獨特的形體風格見稱於國際舞台。《泰特斯》、《泰特斯2.0》及《馬克白》曾在倫敦的「環球劇場」及歐亞多個藝術節獻技；舞劇《舞‧雷雨》廣泛巡演中國及東南亞；歌劇《大同》被選為慶祝香港回歸20周年在倫敦的重點節目；肢體喜劇《打轉教室》曾在世界各地九個城市上演共一百二十七場。他為年青人而設的「形體戲劇訓練課程」獲業界高度評價。重要獎項包括三屆香港舞台劇獎最佳導演獎、香港藝術發展局藝術成就獎、2013香港藝術發展獎戲劇組年度最佳藝術家獎、法國文化部「藝術及文學軍官勳章」，香港演藝學院及嶺南大學榮譽院士。
Ms. Alison M. Friedman (Artistic Director, Performing Arts, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority)Ms Friedman joined the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority in October 2017. She is responsible for leading the dance, theatre, xiqu, as well as music and outdoor teams of the Performing Arts Department to ensure the Authority’s performing arts programmes are conceptualised, curated and implemented in a forward-looking manner that realises the Authority’s vision to be a regional and global leader in the performing arts.
Ms Friedman is a board member of the International Society for the Performing Arts, one of the largest international alliances of leaders in the performing arts. She founded the successful cultural exchange organisation Ping Pong Productions (PPP) in 2010 after studying as a Fulbright scholar at the Department of History in Peking University and the Beijing Dance Academy in Mainland China between 2002 and 2003. She has a deep connection with Chinese arts and culture and is fluent in Putonghua. In 2016, Ms Friedman gave a talk at University of Chicago about the future of China's millennial generation at the Paulson Institute's Contemporary China Speakers Series.
