GE2012-02
Hong Kong may seem like a concrete jungle awash with skyscrapers, but this vibrant city definitely has more to offer. Join the following activities and explore local cultural, rural, and community life and you will be impressed by the diversity. Non-local students are very welcome. Invite friends coming from different places to join and you will enjoy discount.
Session 1(8/9)
Non-verbal physical comedy:《Detention》(打轉教室)
Director: Tang Shu Wing (鄧樹榮先生)
Venue: Shousan Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre
Time: 4:00 pm
Quota: 25
A combination of high-powered acrobatics, throbbing percussion music and off-the-wall clowning, “Detention” is a hilarious theatre performance that people speaking any language can enjoy. Three naughty students are in detention, but most usually, are joined by a top female student this time. The boys begin to compete with each other to earn her heart, but because their short-tempered teacher frequently checks in on them, they must be very careful while monkeying around. The ensuing mischief and mayhem cause chaos in the classroom and hilarity in the theatre; not to be missed!
Session 2(29/9 )
Sham Shui Po Cultural Tour
Co-organiser: Centre for Community Cultural Development
Time: 2:00 pm-4:00 pm
Quota: 30
Sham Shui Po is officially the lowest-income district in Hong Kong. Yet, its vibrant community life, the presence of traditional handicrafts and unique clusters of electronics, garment, toys, and beads shops contribute to a cityscape and social fabric unseen in other parts of Hong Kong. It also boasts the first public housing estate and an arts village converted from a factory building. This tour is also not to be missed by food lovers!
Session 3(6/10)
Tasting Sai Ying Pun
Co-organiser: The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage
Time: 3:00 pm-5:00 pm
Quota: 20
The urban form of Sai Ying Pun is a rich composition of traditional foodstuffs, vanishing trades, old dwellings and built heritage. SYP has been earliest in its establishment and slowest in change. It is, however, increasingly threatened by rapid urban renewal and ever-increasing property prices.
We will visit traditional shops selling rice, medicine, salted fish, and papier-mâché; we will meet shop owners, have a cup of tea and a bite of local dessert; we will also offer an invaluable opportunity to see craft-making demonstrations. You will find more reasons to conserve Hong Kong’s community heritage with this tasting of SYP.
Session 4(31/10)
'Struggle for Survival' Simulation at Crossroads Foundation
Time: 1:00 pm-6:00 pm
Quota: 65
Sympathy for the deprived is easy, but empathy is not. A half-day simulation workshop at Crossroads Foundation is a unique experience that allows participants to walk in the shoes of those who battle impact of global problems to survive their struggles.
