Book Club #CoReadingAtGE

As the COVID-19 crisis has confined us to our homes, there has never been a better time to tackle the books on our ‘to read’ list. In addition to our signature face-to-face Book Club, book talks and sharing by veteran speakers and HKU students will be held online. With this multifaceted Book Club, books will continue to connect us and give us good company wherever we are.
Let’s start by sharing a picture of the books you are reading, under the hashtag #CoReadingAtGE, and tag us (Facebook and/or Instagram: @hkucedars.ge).
Follow the hashtag, as book recommendations by our guests will be posted regularly. In spite of social distancing and lockdowns, a community of HKU book lovers will be formed and, will continue to co-read with each other.

GE2020-07
Book Club: In Love and War

Required Readings:
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
World War One British Poets: Brooke, Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and Others
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

War and love are themes from which great epics spring – think Helen of Troy (Iliad). Put them together in modern day language and you have one of the most moving novels on the human experience of World War I (Birdsong) where war and love are interspersed. But, while prose tells a good story, poetry expresses the deepest feelings at the bottom of our hearts best. A reading of World War One British Poets cannot fail to be heart-rending. On the other hand, the German novel All Quiet on the Western Front (published in 1929 but later burnt by the Nazis) reveals the full horror of war from the other side of “no man’s land”. In addition, great music – both classical and popular – has also been inspired by WWI, and we will encounter some of the best in both genres, plus brilliant documentaries on war and its consequences, in history and in culture.
As always, we expect interactive participation by all members of the Book Club.
