***Venue for GE2014-33C is changed***

This has been a semester when the controversies surrounding universal suffrage became ever more prominent in Hong Kong. Protesters demanded a genuine democratic process in choosing the next chief executive. There were tear gas, occupying of streets, and arrests.

Now, the umbrellas have been folded and the occupation has come to an end. Yet, it leaves many questions unanswered. What are the roles of educational institutions during a student movement? Is Hong Kong’s press ready for the ‘era of disobedience’? How can we professionally keep a record of the movement and avoid romanticising this minority community built with tents and artworks?

GE will continue its ‘Umbrella Series’ this semester. The forums will bring together a number of expert speakers from different fields. They will guide us to understand this milestone movement more – even it did not succeed in its goal.

(09 Feb 2015)
As teenage pupils and university students are at the vanguard of Hong Kong’s political movement, there are a range of voices on how educational institutions should respond. Some say the management should come out of the ivory towers, engage with students, and cherish the students’ protest politics. Some say the schools should maintain political neutrality and ensure that avenues are available for dissenting voices to express their opinions. Experts from the education sector will share their views, and students are encouraged to exchange their thoughts.
This forum is part of the series Hong Kong Agenda and Umbrella Series by the General Education Unit, The University of Hong Kong.
