GE2014-40A/B/C
*** Date and Time for GE2014-40C are changed***
In the words of John Locke, education begins the gentleman, but reading, good company, and reflection must finish him. Thanks to veteran journalist and HKU alumnus, Mr. Kevin Lau who initiated the programme, our newly formed Book Club will offer you all these three elements.
During the four sessions, you will engage in direct dialogues with the books, the hosts, and one another in a friendly and relaxed environment, the Gatherland. The dialogues will also go beyond the Gatherland – you will share your thoughts on the dedicated GE Book Club Facebook page where enthusiastic discussion will continue. Your beliefs and values may be challenged. You may leave with many questions that do not have any final or definite answers. But definitely, you will learn that there is so much more to a book than just the reading of it.
To enrol, students should complete and submit the GE Book Club enrolment form and GE enrolment form, together with the $100 refundable deposit, to the enrolment counter.

GE2014-40A
David and Goliath
by Malcolm Gladwell
The theme of David and Goliath is about the limits of power and the power of the powerless. In 1960s African-Americans made noted achievements in their battle for civil rights through acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience. Some say the movement turned the tide of history, but it is also inevitable in the evolution of society. David’s victory over Goliath was not pure luck, but his strategy.
David and Goliath

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner
Freakonomics tells you that sumo wrestlers throw matches, and teachers cheat; swimming pools are more dangerous than guns; the decline in crime in New York has nothing to do with better policing; and that drug gang members prefer to live with their mothers. By asking pointed questions and taking a hard look at the actual data, you can overturn the conventional wisdom and see the truth.

Arms and the Man & Pygmalion
by George Bernard Shaw
Great literature is not always hard to approach by the lay person, even if in a second language. The plays of George Bernard Shaw are a good place to start.
Pygmalion, which formed the basis of the Oscar winning film, My Fair Lady, and Arms and the Man, was a comedy, yet the play contained a serious question: is character a product of education?
What separates class from class – wealth, breeding or honesty? Does nationalism / patriotism over-ride personal relationships? Are we all individuals first, whatever our colour or creed? Try it for fun.

Host:
Mr. Peter Lai Hing Ling
After graduating with first class honours at HKU in 1973, Mr. Lai joined the Hong Kong Government as an Administrative Officer. From 1985 Mr. Lai was almost continuously engaged in Sino-British negotiations on the future arrangements for Hong Kong and was appointed a Member of the Sino-British Land Commission in 1991-94. In late 1994 he was appointed the first 'local' Secretary for Security of the Hong Kong Government. He left the civil service on 1 August 1998. Mr. Lai is an Honorary Professor at the Department of Politics and Public Administration, HKU.
