The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s Open Door Policy. Over the past four decades, China has transformed itself from a closed-off Asian nation to an emerging superpower.
While the nation is at a turning point in terms of both economic growth and social development, some say China now lacks core values – values that are widely believed in by both officials and the people and reflected in their actions. China is also a laboratory for urban planning on a massive scale, with its ongoing urbanisation combining mega-cities into mega-regions. Meanwhile, tensions between Hong Kong and Mainland China have shown signals of escalating.
These four forums bring scholars, cultural critics, and media practitioners together. You will walk away from the lectures with new perspectives on how to understand contemporary China.

The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s Open Door Policy. Over the past four decades, China has transformed itself from a closed-off Asian nation to an emerging superpower.
China is changing communities across the globe – with its influence on economy, culture, infrastructure, education, and the military power. This is culminated by the recent 19th Party Congress in which President Xi Jinping has solidified his position as China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.
The two speakers will share their perspectives on the 19th Party Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, especially President Xi Jinping’s vision of a China-led new world order.

From Confucian values to socialism with Chinese characteristics, and in the wake of political change and globalisation today, the Chinese have been hit by waves of ideology. While the nation is at a turning point in terms of both economic growth and social development, some say China now lacks core values – values that are widely believed in by both officials and the people and reflected in their actions. The two speakers will share with us their perspectives on the transformation of ethics and morality in the contemporary China.

Hong Kong marks the 20th anniversary of the handover from British to Chinese rule. President Xi Jinping noted the successful practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’, and called for greater patriotism and stronger sense of national identity among the people in Hong Kong as he kicked off the 19th Party Congress last year.
Meanwhile, some say tensions between Hong Kong and the Mainland have shown signals of escalating, for instance pro-democracy legislators were disqualified and a candidate was banned from by-election due to her notion of self-determination.

China is a laboratory for urban planning on a massive scale, with its ongoing urbanisation combining mega-cities into mega-regions. Over the past four decades, hundreds of millions of people have left farms and rural villages and flocked to the cities for work.
Are there any urban planning and sustainable development in these rapidly growing cities? For those who left countryside and have fuelled the nation’s specular economic boom, how’s their integration into urban life?
