As we approach the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle, it seems that more unsettling situations have emerged for both Beijing and Hong Kong. Before we find our way forward, let us take a look back in history—how a city’s identity was formed; the pros and cons resulting from the independence movements in Eastern Europe. Lastly, we will visit the local communities in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, searching for a global connection at the grassroots level. The thread running through these events is the belief that we should have a better understanding of the world above the one country and the communities under the two systems. With a paradigm shift, we may reconstruct different possibilities for the future of Hong Kong.

Communities under the Two Systems—Field Trips to To Kwa Wan and Shenzhen

Lecture 講座
(13 Feb 2017)
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle, it seems that more unsettling situations have emerged. Screening
(20 Feb 2017)
The Singing Revolution portrays how, between 1987 and 1991, hundreds of thousands of Estonians gathered publicly to sing forbidden patriotic songs and share protest speeches, risking their lives to proclaim their desire for independence and end decades of Soviet occupation. The concepts of freedom, independence, and nonviolent resistance with reference of the Estonian history will be discussed. This event is the second session of GE programme ‘Above One Country, Under Two Systems’.
