Hong Kong Agenda
The anti-extradition bill protests heated up in Hong Kong during the summer 2019. We saw demonstrations and clashes with police in different parts of the city, in which protesters were pursuing a range of political and social grievances.
GE has curated a series of programmes for you to understand more about Hong Kong. We will screen a documentary which charts the origins of the Umbrella Movement 2014, invite alumnus to share with us their struggles in the movement and current students to host a news chat on the topic respectively, as well as Dr. Leung Kai Chi to tell you the ten things you did not know about Hong Kong.

Screening and Discussion of Umbrella Diaries: The First Umbrella
2018 | 120 min. | Dir. James Leong | In English and Cantonese with English subtitles

The film charts the origins of Hong Kong’s, “Umbrella Movement” through the eyes of the activists and ordinary people who made it happen. From the June 4th Candlelight Vigil until September 28th in 2014, when tens of thousands of protestors occupied the streets outside Hong Kong’s government headquarters, this documentary puts us at the heart of the action, allowing us to experiencing the highs and lows of that indelible summer, when Hong Kong witnessed a ‘blossoming of democracy.’

The anti-extradition bill protests heated up in Hong Kong during the summer 2019. Human Library features four alumni who were studying at HKU as full-time undergraduates during the 2014 Umbrella Movement, and recently entered into the workforce and a world where what is expected of them often is not so clear cut. They will share with us their respective struggles and life stories through their unique personal narratives.

Since June, Hong Kong has caught the attention of the world. The intensity of demonstrations is increasing with hundreds of arrests, clouds of tear gas, and volleys of rubber bullets.
This session of Global News Chat will be hosted by three full-time undergraduates born and raised in Hong Kong. They were used to be secondary school students during the 2014 Umbrella Movement; and now, they are HKU students amid the current anti-extradition law protests. How do they define and position themselves?
Global News Chat is a programme which invites students from various backgrounds to share their personal views and insights on current issues, with an aim of facilitating some in-depth discussion on significant international and regional news.
This event is part of the GE programme 'Hong Kong Agenda'.
