More Than a Game: Discovering Potential and Purpose through Athletics

More Than a Game: Discovering Potential and Purpose through Athletics

Wong Kai To’s Story
Faculty of Science
BSc

Wong Kai To, Thomas has engaged in a transformative journey in the realm of sports, with a deep passion for athletic pursuits and a commitment to both personal excellence and growth of the sports community.

Thomas participated in finswimming at the 1st National Student (Youth) Games.

From participating in sports games such as the World Junior Ultimate Championship to his former tenure as captain of the Hong Kong (U20) Ultimate Frisbee Team, Thomas has amassed numerous experiences that have not only honed his athletic skills but also transformed his perspective on leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Through his involvement in sports and coaching, he has become more open-minded and learned to wholeheartedly commit to the activities he undertakes, understanding that learning is not just about the end outcome but is a continuous process. This realisation has given him greater confidence in achieving his aspirations.

Thomas represented Hong Kong at the 2024 World Junior Ultimate Championship (WJUC2024).

Thomas is now volunteering as a coach for the HKU Frisbee Club and as a swimming coach in his residential hall, stemming from his belief that sports is not merely a competitive activity. Instead, it serves as a platform for growth without boundaries. Through sports, he has cultivated friendships and formed meaningful bonds with people. He firmly believes that without sports, these connections would not have been possible.

During the USFHK 2024-25 Men's Water Polo Competition, Thomas (2nd from the left, front row) and the HKU Waterpolo Team claimed 1st Runner-Up.

Reflecting on his journey, he encourages younger athletes to try sports before dismissing them, as one never truly knows their potential and limitations until they give it a shot. He also advises against being overly concerned about potential difficulties. While academics can be pressurising, he believes that growth through sports has its own unique meaning and significance. Looking to the future, Thomas aims to contribute to the promotion and professionalisation of sports activities in the Hong Kong community, where he hopes to raise awareness of the sports he loves.
