Crisis outside Hong Kong

When students are in a foreign country away from their home support network, they can feel panic and more helpless during an emergency.  

What you can do

Every crisis is different and your needs may differ. Below are some general points you may consider:

  • Try to stay in a safe place and be with people you trust
  • Stay calm
  • Seek help from the local authorities, agencies, or counselling centre if appropriate
  • Check if you could contact the following parties:
    • Immigration Department 24-Hour Hotline (+852 1868) and WhatsApp provides assistance to Hong Kong residents who travel to the Mainland or outside Chinese territory
    • Intl.SOS 24/7 Assistance Center hotline (+852 2528-9900) provides general assistance, local information such as nearby clinic/ pharmacy, police station, translation services, etc., or travel advice to all HKU students
    • CEDARS (+852 3917-2305) or Email cedars@hku.hk provides assistance and advice to all HKU students, and helps liaise with the Faculties or the related departments or units
  • Report safey to your family as they may be worried about you
  • Report to the programme-in-charge or the administrator of the related office both at HKU and the host.  Tell them what has happened, your current concerns, and needs
  • Follow some adaptive steps to cope with the acute stress reactions
