The Diversity & Inclusion Week 2026: Build Unity, Celebrate Diversity will be held from 2 to 6 March 2026. Jointly organised by Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), Equal Opportunity Unit (EOU) and the Libraries (HKUL), this campus-wide event is dedicated to raising awareness of inclusion and appreciating differences. 

Throughout the week, a series of webinars and talks on SEN-related topics, a movie-screening and sharing session and a fun booth day with experiential activities will be organised. Join us in creating a more inclusive and supportive university community!

1. Webinar on Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs

Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) and Supports for Students with Disabilities/ Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) of Hong Kong seeks to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal opportunity in access to education. It is important for both teachers and administrative colleagues involved in student affairs to understand what may constitute an unlawful act under the DDO and how to support students with special educational needs (SEN). In this online session, Mr. Clifford Lo, Senior Training Officer of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), will talk on the key concepts of disability discrimination, unlawful acts under the DDO, liability and defence, and prevention of discrimination on campus.

  • Applicable fields in the education setting
  • Role of staff in preventing discrimination and sensitivity
  • Sharing of cases involving students with SEN handled by the EOC

Supporting Students with SEN at HKU

As the one-stop student service and resources centre, CEDARS is committed to support students with SEN in overcoming barriers, achieving successful university education and in promoting inclusivity at HKU. In this online session, Ms. Yoyo Ng, Counselling Psychologist, CEDARS-SEN Support, will introduce the SEN Support Services and the roles of staff in supporting students with SEN.

2. Guided Tour to Living with Art – “Artworks – The Path to Becoming an Artist” Final Exhibition

‘ArtWorks - The Path to Becoming an Artist’ is a 32-month project funded by the Arts Development Fund for Persons with Disabilities of the Social Welfare Department. Its aim is to pair local art professionals with artists with disabilities, allowing them to work together in artistic development and cultivation, refine their skills, and establish their own artistic styles.

This final exhibition takes ‘Living with Art’ as its title, featuring diverse mediums including digital illustration, drama, ink art, painting, photography and sand painting. Fifteen sets of works present fifteen journeys and fifteen ways of experiencing life, let us witness together the artists’ transformation into professional creative practitioners. Join the guided tour and explore the artworks.

Programme:  In this engaging session, we are delighted to welcome Ms. Leung Pui Yan Adia (梁佩欣), the author of Hong Kong's first picture book by a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), titled 沉默的溫度. Growing in a deaf family, Pui Yan will share the joys and challenges faced by CODAs and the importance of Hong Kong sign language in bridging diverse worlds. Now working as a part-time social worker, she keenly applies her knowledge of sign language to help others and more. She also served as a sign language interpreter at the recent Olympics and Deaflympics. Join this engaging session to learn more about her inspiring stories and experiences as a sign language interpreter over a steaming cup.

This sharing session is organised by the Equal Opportunity Unit, and registration will be open on a first-come, first-served basis. All students and staff are welcome.

4. Fun Booth Day and Kick-off Ceremony

During the Fun Booth Day, there will be experiential games and activities on Attention-Controlled Brainwave Robot Race, Web Accessibility, DIY braille bookmark, Interactive Photo Booth and other informative booths, providing HKU staff and students with an engaging platform to participate in interactive games and embrace inclusion on campus. Exclusive gifts will be given out.

5. University Screening Tour - Student Mental Health Series: "Ah Cheung: WINGS OF HOPE"《無拘飛祥》

Ah Cheung: WINGS OF HOPE

The event will run from 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm, including a 30-min post-screening sharing.
Venue: Digital Interactive Lab, 2/F Main Library, HKU
Language: The documentary is in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.
The post-movie sharing will be conducted in Cantonese with simultaneous interpretation in English.

About the film

“Ah Cheung: Wings of Hope” is a documentary film that profiles the late LAW Wai-cheung (also known as Ah Cheung), a prominent advocate for disability rights in Hong Kong. Born with cerebral palsy and limited mobility in his limbs, Ah Cheung never let his disability define him or limit his potential. He was known for his active advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities and for living an inspiring life. The film marks the directorial debut of So Ka Ue, with Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Ruby Yang serving as the creative and executive producer. Combining live action and animation, this documentary was selected for the Hong Kong Film Festival UK 2025.

This University Screening Tour, sponsored by the Swire Properties Community Caring Fund, aims to promote students' mental well-being and emotional resilience in today's fast-paced, high-pressure society. Former wheelchair basketball player, Ricky Ho and artist, Bonde Sham will share their experiences in the post-screening discussion.

The Wheels of Inclusion Workshop is an interactive experience to enable participants to engage with wheelchair use on campus. As part of HKU's Diversity & Inclusion Week 2026, we invite participants to explore the realities of living with disabilities through human library and hands-on activities. Professional trainer from the Hong Kong Wheelchair Aid Service (HKWAS) will introduce various types of wheelchairs and practical skills, including safety checks and wheelchair control. Participants will also navigate reflective wheelchair routes on Main Campus, simulating daily challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, such as navigating ramps, stairs, lifts, and accessing buildings. 

This workshop is organised by the Equal Opportunity Unit. All staff and students are welcome to join us.


7. Guided Experiential Class for Sign Language by Deaf Instructors

The Interactive Sign Language Experience will be led by deaf instructors. Participants will have the opportunity to explore deaf culture, gain insight into the experiences of the deaf community, and learn some basic sign language. Through engaging, hands-on activities, participants will discover the joy of communicating and connecting with deaf individuals. We hope this experience will inspire everyone to help build a more inclusive society together.

Each participant will receive a handmade gift, lovingly crafted by talented members of the deaf community. Join us for this meaningful experience.
