Help Someone in Crisis

In a life-threatening emergency:
If there is an immediate threat to the safety of you or another person, call the Police (24-hour) at 999 or the Emergency Ambulance Service (Fire Services Communications Centre) at 2735-3355 or visit the nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department.

  • After then, seek help from the Security Control Office (24-hour) at 3917-2882 if the crisis is happening on campus.
  • Stay with the student or make sure he / she is with somebody. Do not leave the student alone.

Signs of a mental health crisis might include:

  • Overtly suicidal thoughts (e.g. talking about suicide as a current option in oral or written forms)
  • Homicidal thoughts or threats to harm others
  • Gross mental impairments or confusion
  • Loss of contact with reality (e.g. seeing or hearing things, which others cannot see or hear, and beliefs or actions greatly at odds with reality or probability)
  • Bizarre behaviours (e.g. stalking behaviours)
  • Inappropriate communications (e.g. threatening messages or harassment)
  • Highly disruptive behaviours (e.g. hostility, aggression, or violence)
  • Alcohol intoxication or drug abuse
In a non-life-threatening crisis situation:

Refer the student to approach CEDARS – Mind and Wellbeing to make counselling appointments.

You can also contact us at 3917-8388 for advice during office hours.
  • If the crisis situations happen after office hours or the student prefers seeking help outside the campus, the following are some of the governmental and non-governmental service providers.
