Updates on Catering Service (August 2018)

1. Continuation of the Operation of Main Library Coffee Shop (Starbucks Coffee)

In anticipation of the delay in the opening of the new catering outlets at the Main Campus in the new academic year, an arrangement has been made to continue the operation of the Main Library Coffee Shop, currently run by Starbucks Coffee, until May 31, 2019. The new catering concept at the same location, which is to be delivered by the new caterer Sodexo, will commence its operation in August 2019. A new price list equivalent to 30% off the existing downtown retail price of Starbucks will apply commencing August 23, 2018.

2. Interim Catering Provision in September 2018

As the new catering outlets are still undergoing renovation by the new caterer and will not be able to open in time at the beginning of the academic year, temporary food counters will be set up at five different locations in the Main Campus, Centennial Campus and the Sassoon Road Campus. Operation of the temporary pop-up food counters will end progressively following the opening of the new catering outlets. The locations and opening hours of the counters are listed as follows. Catering: Interruption of Catering Services During Summer

You may be aware that the University had engaged a professional consultancy to conduct a holistic review on campus catering services back in 2017.  The consultancy report, which suggested a new approach to campus catering services, was discussed and endorsed by the Committee on Catering in October 2017.  The initiative also formed part of the SMARTER@HKU Programme.

The procurement strategy is to seek the appointment of a “parent caterer” to operate and manage the future services on campus in a phased approach. We are now in the process of a tender exercise for phase one which covers the following 10 operations. We hope to be able to engage this “parent caterer“  by June 2018.  It is anticipated that the mobilization and possible change over of service provider(s) will be carried out during the summer break to minimize impact on the university community.  Please refer to the schedule below for the potential service interruption during the transition period.

Catering Facilities Service Interruption Commencing

Jockey Club Student Village II Restaurant 31.05.2018

Stanley Ho Sports Centre Kiosk (SHSCK) To be announced

More information on the parent caterer, the service delivery and  expected commencement date of new services will be announced in due course .  Please stay tuned with us.

This piece of information could be of particular interest to offices organizing conferences and summer programmes in the next couple of months.  Should you have any enquiry or need advice on catering services, please contact the Catering Team at catering@cedars.hku.hk

We apologize for the inconvenience caused. We are looking forward to a new era of catering service in the University which we believe will add value and interest across the catering areas.
