Yuet Yi, Charmaine
serves as the Director of the Department of Scientific Research at the Hong
Kong Student Association of Neuroscience (HKSAN), where she has pioneered a
platform connecting professors and students who are passionate about medical
research. Open to all disciplines, this initiative offers workshops, training,
and project opportunities—either curated or self-initiated—culminating in a
conference for students to showcase their work.
Charmaine organised a neuroscience workshop
for children at the InnoCarnival.
Beyond research, Charmaine, an Associate
Fellow in Medical Education, organises near-peer teaching sessions, including
mock exams and problem-based learning for clinical students. She also
contributes as a core team member of the Clinical Neuroscience Lab at Hong Kong
Olympia Academy, gaining invaluable ongoing experience.
Her defining moment was launching HKSAN’s
Neuroscience Exhibition, initiated and led by her with a 32-member committee to
plan and execute everything within four months. Held across three malls in two
months, the event educated diverse audiences—from children to the elderly—about
neurodegenerative diseases.
Charmaine launched the first Neuroscience
Public Exhibition of HKSAN, with the theme of neurodegenerative diseases.
She faced a steep learning curve in logistics,
sponsorships, and legalities, reflecting, “Translating complex knowledge into
accessible language was a challenge, but the real lesson was interdisciplinary
collaboration.” She added, “Tasks like outreach and contracts showed me how
medicine thrives with input from other fields—law, business, and beyond.” This realisation
inspired her to found the Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence (AI) Association,
driven by AI’s potential to enrich any discipline. Her past experiences
underscore how teamwork across diverse areas sparks fresh insights. She has
collaborated with the Orbis Future Vision Leaders Programme 2024/25 and HKSAN
on a conference, that encouraged participants to launch fundraising events and
build networks while embracing interdisciplinary approaches.
Looking ahead, Charmaine aims to expand her
association’s outreach, providing students with greater exposure. She is eager
to deepen her expertise in clinical studies for her future in medicine while fostering
innovative AI solutions for healthcare. “I hope to unite young minds to create
impactful advancements,” she said, embodying a vision that bridges science,
education, and community.
Charmaine has completed a clinical attachment
in neurosurgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in
Queen Square, London.
