Robocoach - Award-winning AI System for Exercise Coaching

Chen Yingxian, Carol’s Story
Faculty of Engineering
MSc(Eng)

Meet Carol, co-founder of Hong Kong Univisual Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd. and creator of Robocoach! Carol graduated from the MSc(Eng) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in 2019 with Distinction. For her dissertation, Carol developed an assisted coaching system for yoga and golf.

Robocoach utilizes cutting-edge technologies in computer vision and artificial intelligence, including object detection and posture analysis. When a user stands before the camera, Robocoach can automatically recognise and analyse their posture, providing the user with feedback. This project started out of Carol’s interest in applying computer vision technology to people’s daily lives, and she assembled a team of four to create the system. Robocoach has since won multiple international awards and secured funding from various sources, including Cyberport and Science Park.

Carol reflected that one of the most memorable chapters in her journey was managing her company’s transition into a more general app covering different types of exercises. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students had to attend classes from home and their physical education lessons have been severely disrupted. Now, Carol is working closely with the PE team of the Education Bureau in introducing Robocoach as a tool for running PE classes online. Three schools in Hong Kong will be incorporating Robocoach into their classes starting from November 2021.

Carol is now pursuing her academic interests further as a PhD candidate in artificial intelligence. There is a great degree of flexibility in our timetables as students - especially for those pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees. Carol suggests students to take advantage of this and try pitching their ideas as there are many potential sponsors for startup projects.

Robocoach is now on the App Store and Google Play, and Carol invites everyone reading this to have a try!
