Language Policy for CEDARS Activities

Language Policy for CEDARS Activities

1.  Following the Senate’s endorsement on the recommendation of the Steering Committee on 4-Year Undergraduate Curriculum for HKU, being an English-medium university, to adopt English as the lingua franca on campus, events and activities organised or supported by CEDARS should be announced in English, or with an synopsis in English even though the event would be conducted in Cantonese or Putonghua.

2.  The announcements include posters, mass emails, CEDARS website, CEDARS newsletter, Facebook and other forms of communication. This policy applies to student projects supported by CEDARS.

3.  For activities jointly organised with the outside bodies, the person-in-charge should sound out the need of English input.  In case the use of English was not possible with the speaker or organiser, a synopsis of the activity in English and simultaneous interpretation would be provided where feasible.

4.  HKU is committed to creating, promoting and maintaining an environment for staff and students which provides equality of opportunity and is free of any discrimination or harassment. Colleagues are encouraged to adopt the principles of inclusive language in all publicity and promotion materials. Guidelines on the use of inclusive language can be checked here.
